The kid who made the scene in Ljubljana, helping organize tours in his native Slovenia for foreign indie artists such as Neil Leyton, Turku Romantic Movement, Morgan Finley, James Apollo and others, is growing up. Coming from an arts-oriented family that includes uncle Miha Vipotnik (multimedia artist, painter), grandfather Janez Vipotnik (writer) and great-uncle Cene Vipotnik (poet),
Izak Kosir alias Sir Izak K.O. has now released his debut album - also featuring his brother, guitarist Tadej Kosir.
The road leading to the making of the record wasn't an easy one. Izak took a pocketful of songs to London where he demoed several tracks with guitarist Rich Ragany (ex-Madison Strays, Red Autumn Fall) but nothing came out of the sessions, that were being produced by Neil Leyton - except a stronger belief in the fact that he could do it. But London wasn't right, although several club nights like Stay Beautiful and Glam-o-rama appealed to Izak.
Taking the demos back to Ljubljana, he then enlisted Rami Helin (Turku Romantic Movement) as producer and, under the name The Toronto Drug Bust (a reference to Keith Richards' episode in the 70s), now releases "Enfant Terrible": a 9-song debut that perfectly showcases the breadth and variety of Izak's songwriting, from the mid-tempo radio rock of "The Best of Me" to the balls-out rock n roll of "The Dandy Song", passing through the disco-tinged "Rated B1" that evokes the Stones' disco era, to what is perhaps the best track on the record: "The Death of Romance" is all Velvet Goldmine motion picture Bowiesque feyness, with the necessary lyrical tragedy to raise this debut to a level of depth beyond Izak's few years.
The nine tracks - making it an old school record, all good ones, no filler - feature several Slovenian musicians as well as some guests: other than Rami Helin, who produced and played some guitar, Finns Joonas Granqvist (ex-Turku Romantic Movement, keyboards), Heikki Rasi (percussion), Juho Viljanen (trombone & brass); and Swede Micke Ghost aka Mikael Lundin, former guitarist for Neil Leyton also appears as guest guitarist on "In Line" and the excellent opus "Cigar Superstar", that closes the record.
A solid debut announcing great things to come from the young Slovenian indie singer/songwriter who loves good old fashioned rock n roll.
